Alpine Horse Safaris
📍 The Peaks, Canterbury
Alpine Horse Safaris near Hawarden runs multi-day horse treks from two hours to 12-day expeditions. Clydesdale/Thoroughbred cross horses traverse mountain passes and river crossings. Guides Lawrie and Jenny O'Carroll run all treks personally.
I recently rode on the 12 day Tekapo trek (& have previously ridden on a 6 day trek) with Apline Horse Safaris. The horses are incredibly strong & sure footed. This is an amazing adventure with outstanding scenery that most people will never get the chance to see.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Experienced riders describe the scenery as outstanding and the Clydesdale crosses as remarkably sure-footed. Guides Lawrie and Jenny receive repeated praise for their patience and knowledge of the country. Riders returning from the 12-day Tekapo trek describe it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

“What was supposed to be a bucket list trip for my family quickly turned into a horror trip. Advertised with the proviso that no horse riding experience was necessary. Even with a wealth of experience, no one would walk away from what happened to my mother. The owner/ operator of this establishment was completely negligent. Before settling off on the first day, extremely green horses not having been ridden since the previous trekking season were brought in freshly shod(where was the preparation?). Some were thrashing around on their Tie ups , pulling so hard and rearing over backwards and falling and rolling around on the ground almost choking themselves. Did the owner witness this? No, he had a young man freshly off a plane saddling up who didn’t have much of a clue to what was going on. When the owner appeared(not having seen any of this) he quickly rattled off who was riding who and my unlucky mother got the horse that was previously thrashing around the yards, before I could even intervene and say something he had her up on the horse. Without stirrups or her reins the horse reared up and flipped over landing on top of her- it was very fortunate a lady pulled my mum out from under the horse or she would be dead. Horrifying to watch I now have PTSD and needed counselling after seeing my mother nearly killed. Helicopter had to come pick her and my father up. The group quickly took off and rode on. My mother broke her back, now has had her gall bladder removed and hip replaced. I couldn’t go through with the trip, lost over $7000 and my airfares. Did they offer to refund me?! I’ve not a word from them. Aweful.”
