Aotea Lagoon Playground
📍 Papakōwhai, Wellington
One of the largest free playgrounds in the Wellington region.
Massive playground to suit all ages and abilities! There is a fully fenced toddler playground that for once isn't lame, and has three slides. A cool pirate ship set up, that generates music using the helm. The massive climbing net is super popular and there are also 4x swings. Plenty of picnic tables, seating and a large grassy area for kicking a ball around. Nearby there is a new pump track for kids, wharepaku (public toilets), the lagging, and a scenic toy train ride. A great spot for riding bikes and scooters!
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families with children aged 1 to 12 — each age group has a distinct zone that holds their attention independently. The splash pad and stingray lagoon extend visits through summer. Weekends get busy; early arrivals claim the BBQ spots.

“Totally FREE, no cost to go here. It's a great place to bring the kids to play. Also has a Splash Pad for those hotter summer days. BBQ's for hire, kids playgound filled with fun park equipment, a new skateboard/scooter/skate ramp/circuit and a lagoon where you can see stingrays if you're lucky enough to! A beautiful rose garden when in bloom & swan plants with Monarch butterfly caterpillars & their crystalis. So much to do here!”

“My kids love this place. Even better in summer with the splash pad that is there! Helps keep the kids entertained and cooled off. Great set up playground with plenty of things to do. Also if you time it right there is a small train ride you can pay and take around the grounds. Also community bbq available for people to use for free... pro tip, take some tin foil to cover plate and cook on. Makes clean up easy:)”

“Best playground in the area for kids. Usually is quite packed on weekends. There are a couple entrances to the park but the closest one is the car park further down the road with the entrance being on the left of the car park through the bushes.”

Overview
Aotea Lagoon Playground is one of the Wellington region's largest free play destinations. The fully fenced toddler section has three slides and interactive elements — a genuine zone, not a token enclosure. Older children gravitate to the musical pirate ship with helm, the massive climbing net, swings, splash pad, and a combined skate and scooter circuit. The adjoining lagoon is a known stingray spot. Community BBQs and picnic tables are on site. A small train ride operates at certain times.
