Battle Hill Farm Forest Park offers free camping with fire pits, a barn housing cattle calves, deer, guinea pigs, rabbits, chickens, and eels, natural swimming in a stream-fed pool, and walking tracks from easy family loops to a hill route with
Third time coming here and always leave with a happy feeling! This time we went on a picnic and continued with a one-day camp. We found spots near the graveyard, the streams and campfire area. After the picnic, we decided to visit the barn area (see the cattle calf, little deer, guinea pig, rabbits, chicken, eels), and continued to do a little walk to the hills (purple track) one hour returns. When we arrived at the hills, we saw SH1 between the hills and in the farm area we saw many sheep and cows surrounded by beautiful picturesque hills. Easy track and kid friendly, based on the information board. The farm can only be entered on weekends (just ensure to read the information board about the track). The camp area that we chose, unfortunately, the ground has gravel, so make sure before build the tent that the ground is flat so we can easily nail the tent ropes. There was only a 2-spot toilet area, near the barn and before the streams, with no toilet shower in this camp area. During summer, especially on a good sunny day, the area peaks with people not only for camping but also for picnics. There was a pool near the stream. We could swim there, many kids and adults jumped from the rocks to the pool. Just beware, there were eels living in there. So overall, we really recommend this place.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families attempting their first camping trip — fire pits at most sites, barn animals within walking distance, a swimming hole for summer afternoons, and easy tracks that toddlers complete without complaint. The Te Ao Māori interpretation adds cultural depth that makes the walk genuinely educational for school-age children.

“A fantastic spot to stretch the legs and get out some energy. Regardless of weather, we always have fun at Battle Hill. With walk options for most legs, a tree swing, spots to explore the stream or take a dip, shade in summer, fire pits in winter... And we haven't even mentioned the eels or other animals around at different times. Now with a coffee cart on site some days and potential to get close to some farm animals, it's even more of a hit. We may even camp overnight this summer!”

“Great for putting the tent up for a few nights. Especially if you are just beginners and want to try out putting the tent up and are new to camping. This is a great family camp ground with fire pits at most sites (finding enough bits of wood took a bit of work but the fire was the kids favourite part) friendly sheep, very very friendly goats, eels who love the extra sausages cooked on the barbecue and Guinea pigs to name a few.”
