Denniston Coalmining Historic Area

“The Denniston Coal Mining area and Incline has been on my "to visit" list for years and we finally made it here:-) We stayed in Punakaiki for two nights and figured its not that much further north to come here on our "spare day". The drive up is fully sealed, so easily accessible. Up on top there are a number of areas to explore (and we will have to come back for some of them). There are a number of walking tracks around the old Coal Mining Town and work area and all are very well sign posted and have lots and lots of very interesting information signs with photos on both sides. Some show on old photos where one is standing in relation to the old mining works and others explain more about the daily life of the people who made this exposed plateau their home. This was a fully fledged town with library, school, shops and even a police station. I love history at the best of times but this is next level and every nicely explained and there are still people alive today who have a connection to the area and some houses are still occupied today.”

“this is a well preserved part of west coast history. the info boards we full of interesting pics and history. I can thoroughly recommend a trip through the museum at the information centre down town prior or after a visit here. It help give us a greater appreciation of a bygone era.”
