1 / 3Dunedin Botanic Garden
📍 Dunedin, Otago South
New Zealand's finest free botanic garden — flat wheelchair-accessible lower grounds, a native-bush upper section, a bird aviary, rose garden, glasshouse, and free duck feed from the visitor centre. Plan three hours minimum.
Very large botanic garden that is completely free to visit. The lower garden is flat and wheelchair accessible, but the rest of the garden is very hilly. They have so many different plants so you can absolutely spend a few hours here if you want to see everything. Aviary can be accessed from the East entrance (you can park there) so accessibility there is not an issue. They have lots of interesting bird including a very friendly talking sulfur crested parrot. The visitor centre opens at 10 and have free duck food. There's absolutely tons of ducks around the pond! The cafe at the alpine lodge is closed indefinitely but there's a "coffee cart" as replacement. There's a small glasshouse which was interesting - there was someone sleeping inside on the bench for some reason.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families who want depth over a quick stroll. The aviary, duck pond, glasshouse, and native-bush paths each hold attention separately — plan three hours and bring a picnic. Prams handle the lower grounds with ease; older children can tackle the hilly upper paths.

“There cannot be enough of 6 stars to rate the most extra ordinary botanic garden to be visited worldwide. If there is one thing to visit in the southern island's charming city of Dunedin, it's the botanical garden. Allow 3 hours plus, a great walk in a varied landscape..Enthralling. The team who works on the grounds is delight- and helpful, competent and invested; they do a terrific job. To be commended.”

“What a gem. So much to see that we will have to come back again. Plants were well labeled and there's a great aviary will appeal to all. No matter what your botanic interest, you will likely find it here. There's a sign about an American professor who left part of his estate to take care of the gardens because he found it a peaceful place to be while thinking deep thoughts. I completely understand.”

“A gem of a garden with both easy and challenging walks. A mixture of formal spaces and almost native bush. I loved the rose garden and the glasshouse. We spent a long time wandering the paths of the garden almost getting lost. It's free to get in and you could easily bring a picnic and enjoy a day here as a family.”
