1 / 3Hack'n Stay Golden Bay, Beach Horse Riding, Camping, Accommodation
π Puramahoi, Wellington
Hack'n Stay runs guided coastal treks, vaulting sessions, and horsemanship lessons near Patons Rock beach in Golden Bay. Both English and western saddles available. Camping, farmstay rooms, and backpacker accommodation on site.
I had a great experience at Hack and Stay. Stunning location, excellent facilities and an impressive equestrian setup. Also brilliant value for money for a once in a lifetime experience. I had recently given birth and hadn't ridden in a while so was very nervous about my beach ride, especially on horses I didn't know. However, by the end of the lesson I felt safer, more relaxed and more in control than I have ever done on a horse in decades of riding. Baerbel is an absolutely incredible instructor! It was such an unforgettable experience watching the sun rise over the beach while also having amazing tuition. The camspite itself had excellent facilities and everyone was very friendly. We stayed in a motor home bay which met our needs and the showers etc were nice. We enjoyed walking down to the beach and sitting out eating our dinner on the benches.
π Family Action Verdict
A rare combination of beach riding, overnight stays, and hands-on instruction that works for first-timers and experienced riders alike. The host's expertise and humour set the tone β nervous riders, including post-natal first-timers, are brought along carefully. Families who stay overnight get the full farm experience that day-trippers miss.

βThe farm is incredibly beautiful and lovingly cared for. I not only did the swimming with horses experience but also stayed one night in the yellow horse room at the farm stay. The farm stay is a comfortably furnished and improved house. I immediately felt at home there. All in all the whole farm grounds support a family-like feeling. I loved spending the night there and would have loved to stay longer. For the riding experience, that one was also very unique. Baerbel the horse guide was patiently teaching each of the riders individually. I thought myself to be a confident and experienced rider but after having some time off horseback that confidence was gone. She helped me to regain a great bit of it back in only one hour. I am very grateful to her for that. I would recommend just staying here, as well as booking a riding experience, to everyone.β

βBest horse trek experience I had in New Zealand. Relatively new establishment set up in an American Saloon and deck style but have both English and western saddle types available. The lady who owns the place is fantastic, great humour, big personality and definitely runs the show well. I learned more about horse riding and posture in the 2.5 hours than have done in any lessons before. She focuses particularly on posture and balance, how to use what sport you do to relate to horse riding. Scenery was beautiful, took us through a private track with helpful signage to remind you on posture, up and down hills to give you a nice challenge and then a long ride down the beach, and we could even dip our horsesβs toes in the water. Would highly recommend if youβre this end of New Zealand.β

βDropped in spontaneously and had a great time. Camping facilities are clean and advice on the optimal choice on where to stay based on needs is happily shared. I also participated in the riding which I enjoyed in particular. The tour was well guided with additional staff to make sure inexperienced riders like me could focus on one thing at a time (i e. composure). Additional request due to health topics were also happily taken into account. Also the horses were super calm, really friendly and most importantly well kept and treated. BΓ€rbl enjoys giving plenty of advice on how to seat and hold yourself properly. I really appreciated that. More experienced riders best have an open mindset for this and be willing to learn. (after all, do we ever really stop learning :) )β
