1 / 2Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre
📍 Mount Bruce, Manawatu-Wanganui
942-hectare unfenced breeding sanctuary with free-flying kākā, kākāriki, kārearea, kererū, and tūī. Daily eel feeding, kākā feeding sessions, guided tours, and night kiwi experiences on site.
The motorhome parking was excellent with very clean amenities. The guided tour was interesting, but self guided would have been fine. Some of the birds in aviaties needed patience to spot, but the free flying kaka, kakariki, karearea, kereru and tui were wasy to spot and mostly used to people so easy to photograph.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
The kākā feeding is one of those wildlife moments that stays with kids — free-flying native birds at close range. Come for the feedings and stay for the guided tour.

“Was actually surprised how good this was!! My son and I have phobias of birds so the fact that we went was a miracle. The whole thing is very pretty if tou do the walks and the kaka feeding is brilliant.”

“Paid for a tour and it was worth every penny! Lovely welcome and our guide's knowledge was fabulous. Favourite part was watching the feeding of the Tuna (fresh water eels).”

“When we walked in, we were welcomed so beautifully. She deserves a gold medal. A+++++ The biggest letdown for us was that we arrived there just at lunchtime on Friday, expecting there to be plenty of food, but it was a big letdown on that front as there was hardly any food in the cabinets. The service was very slow and not very welcoming at all, unlike when we first arrived. Getting our food and hot drinks to the table took a very long time as well. I don't recommend the cafe, and I didn't think that it was overly busy. Tollaly love seeing the Kiwi's & also seeing the eles get feeded”
