Best for a summer day trip with swimmers. Rere Falls is a 20 metre wide curtain of water a minute from the car park, with a swimming pool below, picnic tables and toilets. Two kilometres on is the 60 metre Rere Rockslide, ridden on boogie boards.

Lots of car park available, note that it has one car lane. The waterfall is seen straight away when still driving towards the car park. Easy walk down to the waterfall, it can be muddy. The view is amazing, the waterfall is massive. To get as close as possible to the waterfall will require going through mud and rocks. A table with benches is available if you wish to have a picnic.

πŸ† Family Action Verdict

The classic Gisborne summer outing: picnic and paddle at the falls, then let confident swimmers loose on the rockslide with a boogie board and a parent watching from the bottom. It is a fast, hard, natural slide, so it suits primary-age children and up who can swim, with an adult in the water. Check depth and debris first; skip it after heavy rain.

ℹ️ What to Know Before You Go

πŸ’‘Bring boogie boards or inflatable tubes for the rockslide; nothing is hired on site
⏰The rocks on the slide and around the falls are extremely slippery, so wear water shoes and hold small children
🎟️Check the water depth and look for submerged branches before swimming or sliding, especially after storms
πŸš—Only confident swimmers should ride the slide, with an adult in the water at the bottom basin

β€œRere falls are a peaceful relaxed area. The falls have slightly grown wider woth recent heavy downfalls and battling terrible weather, but what's left behind is magnificent. Well maintained, easy vehicle access, ample room for picnics and safe to swim if you've brought your togs and its warm enough.”

β€œNothing quite like a wall of water with a light mist to give you perspective on the majesty and magic of nature. Great place to stop for a picnic or just take time to reflect. The sound of the waterfall can be soothing and hypnotic. Great place to stop. Only a few steps from the carpark. Enjoy”

Overview

Rere Falls sits on the Wharekopae River about 50 kilometres north-west of Gisborne, a five metre drop stretched across a 20 metre ledge, so it looks like a curtain rather than a plunge. It is a minute's walk from the car park, with a calm pool below for swimming, picnic tables, toilets, water and fireplaces. Two kilometres further on is the Rere Rockslide, where the river races down a smooth 60 metre rock face into a deep basin and people ride it on boogie boards and tubes. Both are free.
