“What I didn't realise at first is that Running Grid is remotely manned - there's nobody at a reception desk to talk to. This means that you need to have all your electronic ducks in a row before you book. You'll want at least a working email address and credit card. Once that's out of the way, the experience itself is super fun for all ages. There's a variety of games to play at varying difficulties and your team name and score are nationally and locally ranked. Be prepared to get competitive and to argue about who hit the red square this time.”

Running Grid's Hamilton branch on Alexandra Street is a private, book-your-own-room version of the floor-is-lava game: over 280 touch-sensitive floor tiles light up and your team races to hit the right ones and beat the clock, with a second room built around a hide-and-seek style chase. You pick from a rotating library of themes and difficulty levels on a tablet, and scores post to a national leaderboard. The venue is unstaffed and runs on door codes, so you book online and let yourselves in.
