Best for a full family day with a range of ages. Ride the gondola up Mount Ngongotahā for lake views, then luge the downhill tracks (solo from six, tandem from two), with a zipline and Skyswing for bigger kids and a restaurant up top.
An iconic Rotorua experience that can't be missed. Within a few minutes you're up the top and the views from the top overlooking the town are incredible. We purchased 5 luge rides and although one track was unavailable for maintenance, we got to experience the other 4 and then redo our favourite. The staff were accommodating and friendly and helped me find a cart for my size being over 2m tall. The squeals and laughter echo through the hillside on the ride back to the top and you can take a break at any time in the restaurant nearby if you need.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Rotorua's classic family day and worth the spend if you buy a multi-ride luge pack, since one run is never enough. Toddlers can ride tandem, six-year-olds go solo, and teenagers get the zipline and Skyswing. Weather closes the outdoor rides, so check the forecast, and go early in school holidays to beat the queues.

“We visited Skyline Rotorua with the family, and everyone had an incredible time. The kids were absolutely thrilled with the luge tracks, and the gondola ride offered stunning panoramic views that the adults loved just as much. It is the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, with plenty of activities to keep all age groups completely entertained. Highly recommend it to anyone visiting Rotorua with family—it is worth every moment!”

“On my 80th birthday 20th July, first time ever I rode on a gondola! Absolutely loved it. Staff kindly slowed it down so I could get on and off safely, a huge thank you for that! At the restaurant I was given a lovely card signed by staff, as well as a birthday plate with cake and candles, what a lovely surprise. A very memorable birthday.”

“Family of 4 did the 5 Luge rides each - best fun ive had in a long time! We were hoping to try the swing and the zip line but the weather was cold and rainy so we will have to come back another time. Thanks for a great day out.”

Overview
Skyline's gondola climbs Mount Ngongotahā in a few minutes to a summit complex overlooking the lake. The draw for families is the luge: gravity carts steered down several tracks with a chairlift back to the top. Children ride solo from six years and 110 centimetres, and toddlers from two can ride tandem with an adult. Bigger kids can add the forest zipline or the Skyswing drop ride. There is a buffet restaurant and cafe at the summit, walking trails, and a mountain bike park.
