I had the most amazing experience sailing with Auckland Whale & Dolphin Safari. From the very beginning, the crew impressed me, they are not only friendly and welcoming but also highly professional, clearly passionate about what they do. As we departed from the dock, we were treated to stunning views of Auckland’s skyline, with its iconic buildings standing proudly in the distance. The coastal scenery and nearby islands along the way made the journey even more breathtaking. Out at sea, the experience became truly magical. We encountered an abundant number of dolphins, playful and not shy at all, making the moment unforgettable. Above us, plenty of seabirds circled gracefully, a clear sign of life teeming beneath the waters. With patience, there was also the chance to spot whales. As our guide explained, sightings can be unpredictable, sometimes you’re lucky enough to see them up close or even breach, sometimes they stay hidden. But that unpredictability is part of the beauty of observing wildlife in its natural environment. Overall, this safari was extraordinary. The combination of spectacular sailing views, the abundance of marine life, and a crew dedicated to making the journey enjoyable and informative made it an experience I’ll never forget. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Auckland.

πŸ† Family Action Verdict

A genuine marine wildlife experience underpinned by active science β€” the crew get visibly excited every time a dorsal fin surfaces, which is contagious. Suited to all ages; toddlers are accommodated on board. Dolphin sightings are frequent; whale encounters are seasonal and not guaranteed.

ℹ️ What to Know Before You Go

πŸ’‘Book in advance during summer β€” departures fill quickly in peak season.
⏰Bring layers regardless of the forecast β€” conditions on the Hauraki Gulf change fast.
🎟️Ask the crew about the University of Auckland research collaboration β€” they're well-briefed and enjoy talking through it.

β€œAll I could say is GO!! This is an amazing and highly must go adventure in Auckland. It really depends on luck I would say to see the dolphins and whale, though I would say we got lucky in the first 30 minutes to see some dolphins that they even came so close to the boats and was jumping at the side and swimming in the front of our cruise the spectacular moment of just watching the animals in their own habits. Sadly after that there was no more sea creatures but they did offer a coupon for us to come back at half price with no expiration date. So highly will do make another trip down to see those sea creatures again and cross fingers hopefully we are able to enjoy the full journey.”

β€œAttended the safari and it was absolutely worth it. Since they have a conservation collaboration with the university of Auckland, the tour is very scientific based with parts of practical and theoretical research, which I loved. Very polite and friendly staff and a respectful way with the animals. Also great for solo travellers.”

β€œSuch an amazing day out on the water! Emily, Sanaa, John and Joseph were exceptional at their jobs and had some awesome fun facts to share. The tour includes some science which was a cool addition and there is an option to purchase photos taken by a guide at the end if you'd like. Would 10/10 recommend this tour!”
