1 / 3Glenbrook Vintage Railway
π Waiuku, Auckland
Ride restored vintage carriages between Glenbrook and Waiuku on a working steam locomotive, with a photo stop en route. Seasonal events include Day Out With Thomas, Christmas light trains, and first-class dining runs.
A Magical Coastal Escape and Christmas Wonder If you are looking to escape the city bustle without driving for hours, Glenbrook is an absolute treasure. My recent visit here left me feeling completely refreshed, and the photos truly donβt do justice to the peacefulness of this coastal pocket. The first thing that strikes you is the unspoiled natural beauty. As seen in the images, the coastline offers vast, open views where the sky meets the shimmering water. Itβs the kind of place where time seems to slow down, offering a sense of tranquility that is simply unmatched. The highlight of this trip, however, was experiencing the seasonal magic of the Christmas lights. Seeing the area transformed by festive displays against the backdrop of the quiet harbour was spectacular. The lights add a whimsical charm to the rugged landscape, making the evening feel truly special. It is a fantastic way to celebrate the season with family, combining the raw beauty of New Zealandβs coast with a warm, festive community spirit. For those who enjoy photography, the contrast of the glowing decorations against the darkening horizon is stunning. Itβs a very family-friendly spot; the atmosphere is safe and welcoming, maintaining a "local secret" vibe that is hard to find these days. The community feels quiet, and the area is immaculately kept. Glenbrook is a 5-star destination for anyone who appreciates natural scenery and a festive soul-recharge. Whether for the views or the holiday magic, it is highly recommended!
π Family Action Verdict
Best for school-age kids and adults who appreciate working heritage machinery β the sound and scale of a live steam locomotive is genuinely arresting. Christmas light trains book out fast; secure tickets early. Jigger rides add variety for families wanting more than one activity.

βMy partner and I went on the Xmas light train. Absolutely loved it. Will definitely be returning again and have already planned next trip up during Easter to ride the steam trains. A lovely place for anyone to go.β

βCelebrating our wedding at Glenbrook Vintage Railway was a truly unforgettable experience that we will cherish forever. The historic steam locomotive was a breathtaking centrepiece to our ceremony in the nostalgic ambience of the Glenbrook Station, and the staff's passion and expertise helped us to bring our dreamy romantic vision to life. We are eternally grateful to everyone involved in making our day exceptionally special. Our guests certainly expressed how much they loved the whole experience! Photos by Sara Coppell.β

βA wonderful vintage railway experience where you can enjoy scenic views of the opposite side of Auckland. The ride lasts nearly 40 minutes and includes a photo stop, which was truly enjoyable. The staff were very friendly, and the service was highly appreciable. I recommend trying both the Jigger manual and motorised options. The manual jigger has a limited distance, whereas the motorised jigger takes you all the way to the next nearest station. Overall, it is a worthwhile and memorable vintage experience.β
