This place is incredible. Ina was an incredible guide. Our group was mixed between advanced riders and beginners. Ina paired us with the best horses for each one of our riding levels. The horses are well mannered and very well taken care of. They love their job and know their way through the hills and jungle of New Zealand. If you go riding with Huntaway Farms, it is important to know that even though they are super accommodating, they do not offer childcare. So if you travel with children under 12, it’s best to leave them at home. Ina took great care in explaining the rules and personalities of our horses. Her instructions were helpful, especially on the trail. Ina also took time to teach us about the land we rode on. The history was interesting. We learned about the land predators, and land conservation. The scenery was so beautiful! We rode through a couple of herds of cattle. It made the entire ride very enjoyable. We were offered to trot or canter to our comfort and honestly, we didn’t want to. Because the surroundings were so beautiful, we wanted to soak in every bit of it. I highly recommend Huntaway Farms for your horse back adventure in New Zealand. Very friendly people, and very friendly horses. This is the greatest cure for boredom. Enjoy!

What a wonderful, soul nourishing experience! Ina is a wonderful and responsible host. She picks the appropriate horse for the riders experience and temperament. She is careful to explain what to do to ride safely and get maximum enjoyment and is constantly checking in so you know you are in safe hands whatever your level. Huntaway farms is real and wholesome. Loved the undulating landscape and our time through the bush. Loved being paired with an experienced rider and given some safe freedom to explore higher gears. Thank you Ina and Steve for sharing your paradise with us x

It was an amazing tour. I did a 2h experience ride, and Ina led us through the jungle together with her breathtaking and trusting horses. She was a really good guide, looked after all of us, so I felt absolutely safe. Although it was so much fun to gallop through the jungle and over the grasslands! I would always do it again. Big thank to you Ina!

Ina and Steve were fantastic we enjoyed every second of the horse trek! Me and my family were all beginners and most of us had never been on a horse before but we felt supported and safe. The horses were lovely and had such good characters. There was fantastic farm and bush views on the journey - couldn’t recommend more thank you ! 🤠

Overview

Huntaway Farms Horse Trekking is a small-group trekking operation between Tauranga and Rotorua, in the Bay of Plenty. Host Ina runs treks with typical group sizes of 4–6 riders. Riders are asked detailed questions beforehand to help match the right horse — calm, low-energy horses for nervous beginners and children, and more responsive horses for confident riders. Treks are intended as a shared family experience, not a drop-off activity, and children must ride with their parent(s) or accompanying riding adult. Due to the close supervision younger riders require, groups are limited to a maximum of 2–3 children. Bookings are essential.
