A calm, easy outing that suits prams, toddlers and grandparents better than most Rotorua attractions, and a good counterweight to a day of sulphur. It is a walk, not a wow, so pair it with a picnic on the lake shore. Go on a clear day and early if you can, when the water is at its bluest and the trout are easy to spot.

βIβve never seen water so clear and pristine! The self-guided tour around the lake costs just $18 NZD and takes about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on your pace. The walk is surrounded by stunning nature, including a gorgeous redwood grove, and there are interesting facts about the lake along the way. Absolutely beautifulβ10/10 experience. A must-see in Rotorua!β

βWhat a stunning spot. The walk was easy and full of surprises. The giant redwoods were awesome inspiring and I don't think I've ever seen such clear waters. The gentleman on reception was a treasure on his own π He was delightful. He had us in stitches. I could have stayed and chatted for hours. This truly was a great wee spot to meander.β

Hamurana Springs, twenty minutes around the lake from Rotorua, is a walk rather than a geothermal park: a flat, well-formed loop follows the Hamurana Stream to the main spring, which pushes out more than four million litres an hour and is so clear you can see the sand boiling at the bottom. A grove of redwoods planted in 1919 as a war memorial gives the walk its shade. The main trail takes about half an hour, but allow an hour to spot trout, waterfowl and the cultural sites along the way.
