1 / 2Katikati Bird Gardens
📍 Aongatete, Bay of Plenty
Katikati Bird Gardens sits on the edge of Tauranga harbour, with water-lily ponds, mature trees, and bird varieties wandering freely through sealed paths — including talking parrots, displaying peacocks, and birds that climb onto visitors.
This place is enchanting. Amazing birds full of character, our two boys loved them (they climb on you so he prepared for that!) Cool Balinese style furniture and bits and pieces that make it feel like a big adventure. Two male peacocks and a bunch of females so they do they whole tail thing. Cool playground, charming parrots that talk. Incredible garden walk with exotic and local plants. It's really a gem and wish we'd known about this sooner!
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Reviewers call it enchanting — toddlers adore the ducks and chickens, older kids love the talking parrots and peacock displays, and parents get a genuinely beautiful garden walk. The birds are hands-on and will climb on you, which is half the fun.

“We had a lovely experience and will definitely recommend visiting the party. It's a beautifully well kept park ❤️ The birds are so happy and well looked after. One of the many highlights was my husband saying it's the best choc banana muffins he ever had! I recon this will be a stunning wedding venue, but I'm not sure if they allow events like that 🌸”

“Our 17 month old loved the ducks, chickens and other birdlife. Lovely setting on a lovely day. Some birds are very 'friendly', so some bird food to lead them away was handy.”

Overview
Created in 1976 across ten acres running down to the harbour edge, Katikati Bird Gardens features 1.5 kilometres of sealed meandering paths through golden Swamp Cypress, camellias, magnolias, azaleas, and natural wetlands. Bird varieties roam freely or inhabit aviaries scattered throughout — including talking parrots, peacocks, ducks, and chickens.
