Korohe Horse Treks
📍 Tūrangi, Waikato
Korohe Horse Treks runs guided rides through pine forests and rivers near Tūrangi, ten minutes south of Lake Taupō. Family-run for over eight years, with horses matched to each rider's experience and small, semi-private group sizes.
My partner and I had a great experience with Korohe horse treks. I have previous riding experience and my partner has ridden once or twice before, Ringo our guide, matched us with two beautiful horses who were perfectly suited to our experience and confidence levels. We were the only two on our trail ride so it was a lovely experience with a small group of us. Ringo and Tory our guides were so friendly, knowledgeable and had a great sense of humour! All horses are extremely well cared for and trained using natural horsemanship techniques. Our highlight was having multiple river swims with our horses, such a dream come true moment. Even got to see a herd of wild horses near Korohe including two very young foals! Would highly recommended to anyone wanting a trail ride or swimming with horses experience suitable for any skill level. Thank you Korohe horse treks, Ringo, Tory and the team for a fantastic experience we won’t forget!!!
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Suits riders from beginners to experienced — guides match each person to a horse on arrival. The river-swim ride is the most-mentioned highlight in reviews, and several reviewers single out individual guides (Ringo, Tory, Nevada) for the personal touch. Small, semi-private group sizes mean everyone gets attention.

“I had a wonderful ride with Korohe Horse Treks. I am an experienced rider, so was looking for some good canter and gallop time in the tack, and I got it! I rode a sweet horse named TK and Ringo was my guide. He took me through a beautiful forest where the pine trees met to create tunnels and it was really magical.. and so much fun to canter through the woods. The owners and the staff clearly love their horses. It was a wonderful experience from the time I first reached out to Satori by email, to crossing the chest deep river… I would highly recommend this operation to riders of all levels.”

“We had such a wonderful trek with Korohe. They are a very professional set up. Took our measurements and matched us with an appropriate horse. The horses looked healthy and happy. The scenery was stunning, the trek was a good gentle pace and we were matched with another family which was lovely. Everyone really enjoyed it. Thank you so much to the team for being so warm and welcoming.”

Overview
Korohe Horse Treks is a family-run trekking operation 10 minutes from Tūrangi (40 minutes from Taupō). Guides match each rider to a horse based on age, height, weight, and experience, then take small semi-private groups through pine-forest tracks, rivers, and back-country trails. Walking-pace rides suit first-timers; faster trot-and-canter rides are available for experienced riders. In warmer months they run a river-swim ride where you swim alongside your horse. Welfare of the horses is a stated core value, with regular specialist checks.
