1 / 2Tongariro National Trout Centre
π Rangipo, Waikato
Tongariro National Trout Centre offers a native freshwater fish aquarium, a Rainbow Trout hatchery tour, a fly fishing museum, a children's fishing pond, and bush walking trails with views of the Tongariro River. A full visit runs around two hours.
Set in lovely Native bush setting includes an easy bush walk with views of rainbow trout in their natural settings. Very helpful staff, although I didn't go into the centre ($22 an adult) due to time constraints. Car park is locked at 4.00
π Family Action Verdict
Reviewers consistently recommend it for families β the fishing pond where kids catch their own trout is a standout memory-maker, and the bush walk with the underground viewing chamber adds something genuinely unusual. A two-hour visit is comfortable and the grounds are beautifully maintained.

βTongariro National Trout Centre is a worthwhile stop, especially for families with kids. It is located 3 km from Turangi town centre along the Tongariro River. It could also be a refreshing stop for nature lovers and curious minds as well. It offers a fascinating glimpse into New Zealandβs freshwater ecology, with native fish displays and a well-curated aquarium featuring species like Giant Kokopu and Koaro. The hatchery tour and museum provide insight into the history of trout fishing in the region, making it both educational and engaging. Kids especially love the fishing pond, where they can catch and even smoke their own rainbow trout, an experience thatβs both memorable and delicious. The grounds are beautifully maintained, and the riverside walk adds a peaceful touch to the visit.β

βFantastic. We spent a good 2 hours here. So much information about how the Trout got to NZ and Lake Taupo. Feeding the fish was fun, feeding frenzy. The walk to the river was interesting.β

Overview
Set in native bush three kilometres from Turangi, the Tongariro National Trout Centre combines indoor and outdoor attractions. The native aquarium houses Giant Kokopu, Koura, Tuna, Koaro, and other freshwater species that are experts at camouflage β spotting them all is part of the fun. The fly fishing museum traces the history of Rainbow Trout introduction to New Zealand. A working hatchery tour walks through the original 1920s building. Children can try catching Rainbow Trout in the dedicated fishing pond. A bush walking trail follows the Tongariro River with an underwater viewing chamber. DOC walking areas can be accessed freely outside of paid admission.
