You need to time this one to arrive ahead of high tide and it can get very busy. Nice views at other times but high tide fot the blowhole show. Pancake Rocks is an incredible natural landmark, with layered limestone formations that look almost unreal and make the whole coastline feel dramatic and unique. The walkway is easy and well‑maintained, with plenty of viewpoints where you can watch the waves crash through the blowholes on a rough day. The contrast of rugged rock, blue water and lush West Coast scenery makes it a fantastic stop for travellers and photographers. A must‑see location that feels both accessible and truly impressive.

One of the most rewarding twenty minutes you can give a small child on the coast: flat paths, safe barriers, and waves that explode out of the ground near high tide. Check tide times at the DOC visitor centre across the road, cross the highway carefully, and give it an hour so the kids can wait for the big surges.

“Always one of my favourite natural attractions in NZ. Took hubby for his 1st visit and he loved it too. Tide was just coming in so reasonable blows and surges. Walkway is unique and the scenery stunning. Pancake Rocks never fail to impress. Great toilet facilities on main road and fabulous gift shop. Definitely get the extra parking time as it's worth waiting for those great photo opportunities. Always 10/10!”

“It was still the same from 17 years back, majestic rock formations, nice and easy walk. With more improvement on safe crossing to and from the parking lot, (used to just park on the side of the road) and more shops now and better toilets. Went there at 4PM so there was plenty of vacant parking space, and wasn't that busy at the viewing area. A must see on a cold winter night, such a view during sunset.”

“Half the beauty of this stop was the drive to get there. It was stunning! It's well worth the stop and walk. Easy with well placed viewpoints to take full advantage. I would pay more attention to time if I went again and aim for midmorning to noon. Late afternoon was not great for a lot of photo spots with direct sun or too many shadows.”

Overview
Pancake Rocks sits at Dolomite Point in Punakaiki, 45 minutes north of Greymouth, where 30 million years of layered limestone has eroded into stacks that look like piled pancakes. A paved loop of about 20 minutes winds between lookouts over the rocks, surge pools and blowholes, level enough for prams and assisted wheelchairs apart from one optional set of steps. The show is the sea: at high tide with a south-westerly swell the blowholes boom and throw spray over the path.
