1 / 3Punangairi Visitor Centre - Paparoa Experience
📍 Runanga, Canterbury
The Paparoa Experience in Runanga blends Ngāti Waewae cultural stories with interactive West Coast geology and wildlife exhibits. An on-site café, large-vehicle parking, and pram access make it a strong all-weather stop.
What an incredible addition to the West Coast, it completely blew us away. Immersive, beautifully designed, and brings the rich stories of the region to life in such a creative way. The parents came along (they’re travelling in a motorhome) and they absolutely loved it too, it’s such a great all-weather experience, perfect for families and visitors wanting to understand the magic behind this part of New Zealand! A big plus for us was the large vehicle parking just a two-minute walk away ideal when you’re towing a caravan or travelling in something bigger. The Visitor Centre is attached, which makes it easy to grab local info, and we couldn’t resist stopping at the café next door afterwards, great coffee and yummy food to finish off the visit! And of course, it’s right across the road from the famous Pancake Rocks and Blowholes, so you can make a full morning or afternoon of it. Special thanks to Keefe and Sheryl for their warm hospitality and passion for sharing this experience, you’ve created something truly special here. We'll be back!
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Reviewers describe arriving with low expectations and leaving blown away — the combination of stunning design, Māori storytelling, and interactive geology makes it one of the West Coast's best all-weather family stops.

“Best coffee in New Zealand. Spent 4 weeks in NZ, drinking coffee at lots of recommended spots. The coffee the at the visitor center café, was the best I had. Infact I got a second just for the taste. Was there around Dec 13th, so whoever that female Barista was excellent.”

“A surprising joy. Interesting, educational and the blow hole was hysterical. Hats to off to Catherine for her greeting, introduction and for bringing a bowl of water to Bob the Dog. A must do experiance.”
