We had a hugely enjoyable morning on a guided bird tour. Stunning surrounds, lots of birds, and lots of learnings!

🏆 Family Action Verdict

School-age kids come away knowing what a godwit is and why it flew 12,000km to this exact mudflat. Book a guided tour — the volunteers are genuinely passionate and let kids use their scopes.

The guided tour was a unique experience, we saw many shorelines! We hired the scope, which is a very helpful to see them better, but if you don't, the guide will share views of birds with you through theirs. Wonderful dedicated volunteers and beautiful merchandise at the centre. You can also lodge at the centre in bunkrooms or self contained cabins. You can bring your bikes and ride to Kaiaua (7.1km away, or 1.5-2 hrs ride) along a shell chip bike track along the coastline.

Awesome team at the centre. It has a nice retail area plus some nice informational displays. The team is more than happy to provide recommendations for when and where to see the migratory birds, when they are back from their breeding. Tl;Dr go to the Robert Findlay park, two hours either side of high tide, between August and March.

Has a few displays of preserved birds, which help me identify "the current local", which often arrive from the North and NE Pacific, so I read. 2km to South is a 5-10 minute walk to three bird blinds, which is best visited near low tide. I saw two huge flocks take off then land near by. I didn't have bird watching binoculars.
