Been here twice and both times were wonderful, it's recommended you arrive within 2 hours of high tide. It's worth waiting for the tide to start going out to see the birds leave. It might be similar watching them arrive.

🏆 Family Action Verdict

Visitors who time their arrival with the tidal cycle describe the bird activity as genuinely spectacular — large flocks of godwits and oystercatchers moving together in mass formations. When a guide like Pete is on site, the experience is described as significantly richer for families with children.

Amazing place to view the migratory birds. We were lucky enough to come when a guide wad there, Pete, who was awesome explaining and pointing out the bird types there. Recommendation, come two hours before High tide, then you can see the birds go from the goodwit hut fly over to the second mudflat to rest. Best come around Feb March when the males have their mating feathers. Birds usually start arriving from their migrations in August.

Amazing place. I visited in the evening at just before high tide, when the godwits and oystercatchers were very active, and put on an amazing display. If you can catch high tides either early morning or evenings this would be the best conditions for light and activity. Plus some patience. I would allow several hours.

What a magical find ✨ pays to go 2 hours either side of high tide so the bird life viewing is best. Either way it’s a lovely wander in nature & bird song. Lovely park range there & you can tell a lot of love & care goes into the maintenance and minding of this reserve.
