4 of us were lucky enough to find this REAL NEW ZEALAND TOUR day, where we visited an actual family working sheep farm and tour, followed by a beautiful farm to table locally made lunch and after that by a wonderful winery overlooking the β€œDoctors” Alps, featured in the Lord of the Rings movies and led by our wonderful guide, Simon. The ride from Christchurch seemed like a hop & a skip while Simon gave us a wonderful narrative about the history of the island and its local towns. Next we learned about the local sheep farms from James, his daughter Ellis and family, then got to see James shear one of the ewes himself- lots of feeding and petting the β€˜residents’, followed by a scenic look at the coast the family enjoys on their land. After lunch (yes, it was great) we went to the family owned winery at GEORGE’S ROAD WINERY and were greeted by the famous family dog, Pepper. The wines were delicious and the owners & staff, Lily & Brenton were lovely! Simon, you’re the best! Thank you- we had a fabulous day! I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone visiting the island.

πŸ† Family Action Verdict

Reviewers consistently call out guide Simon as the standout and praise the authenticity (this is a real working farm, not a tourist setup) and the picnic lunch. Multi-generational groups are mentioned in several reviews.

β€œWe visited a working sheep farm in New Zealand outside of Christ church February 2026. It was amazing. 3 generations working a 1900 acre sheep & cow farm on the edge of the sea. We focused on the sheep, shearing, working dogs & herding the sheep, and went to a winery afterwards with a beautiful boxed lunch with wine tasting. The owner of the farm also shared their vintage collection of tractors and farm planting/harvesting implements. Fascinating tour!!! Our tour guide, Simon, was very informative as a life long resident of small town near Christ Church and very helpful. James and family are impressive in their hard work to keep the farm working. See pics from a truly amazing, authentic Kiwi experience! Loved it!”

β€œWhat a wonderful tour! Our amazing guide Simon was very knowledgeable and friendly! We were able to visit Glenafric Farm to watch sheep shearing (a working sheep farm run by a sweet NZ family), followed by a delicious lunch prepared with homegrown vegetables from this farm, a stop at Georges Road Winery with wine tasting (and a cute dog Pepper!) and so much information about the regions along our 45- min drive from downtown Christchurch that it made us want to live here! You will be on a big, comfortable, air conditioned bus with water and cookies provided. So glad we found Real New Zealand Tours! Highly recommended!”

β€œWhat a great adventure with this company! From the owner Geoff who went out of his way to accommodate us to our most friendly, informative, knowledgeable driver Simon, who was a complete jem! The farm owner James and his family have an informative tour of their land, animals and shearing program. We got to feed and pet many of the friendly sheep's. Just a lovely experience. And the winery on the way home was exceptional, beautiful land, tasty wine and wonderful puppy that greets everyone! Thank you Simon for a fantastic day. P.S. our lunches were the very best!!”
