1 / 3Redwoods Treewalk
π Whakarewarewa, Bay of Plenty
Best for kids who can walk 700 metres on their own. A chain of suspension bridges strung up to 25 metres high through giant redwoods, glorious by day and lantern-lit by night. Free forest tracks below for prams.
experience that allows you to walk amongst 120-year-old giant redwood trees. Elevated between 9 and 20 metres above the forest floor, the 700-metre walkway consists of 28 suspension bridges, providing a unique bird's-eye view of the stunning silver ferns and exotic forest below. β’ The daytime walk is peaceful and immersive, perfect for nature lovers and families who want to appreciate the scale of these magnificent trees. β’ By night, the forest is transformed into a magical wonderland with 34 large lanterns designed by David Trubridge, creating a completely different, almost otherworldly atmosphere. β’ The experience is very accessible; they even provide purpose-built strollers for free to ensure families with young children can enjoy the treetop journey together. β’ For those seeking a bit more adrenaline, the "Altitude" experience offers higher bridges and ziplines for a more adventurous perspective of the canopy.
π Family Action Verdict
A Rotorua must-do once your kids can walk the whole loop unaided, since babies cannot be carried on the bridges and personal prams are not allowed. Book a Nightlights slot around sunset and you get both versions in one visit. Toddlers and the pram crowd still get a great outing on the free ground-level forest tracks from the same car park.

βAn absolute magical experience and well worth it. We chose to do this at night to see the lanterns and we we didnt' regret it! You feell safe at all times and there are plenty of platform spots to stop and take it all in. Between the stars above, the lanterns around and the lights below it was just an incredibly immersive experience. We bundled it with the glow worm experience which was fun and informative to compliment the night.β

βMy partner and I did both the Treewalk and the Glow worm caves. Both were really great. The treewalk was a beautiful walk during night time, as the the light installations really put on a show. It was an easy walk with enough time to soak up the sights and take photos. The glow worm caves are interesting to see, and our guide showed us up close what the larva looks like. Both experiences better seen with the naked eye!β

βA beautiful walk through the forest. You can choose your challenge. For a fee you can walk through the treetops day or night. Small cafe offers hot and cold drinks plus some smaller pastries. Fun place to bring the kids and a great place for walking, biking, and photography. I would say a don't miss.β

Overview
The Treewalk is a 700 metre loop of suspension bridges and platforms slung between 120-year-old redwoods on the edge of Rotorua, up to 25 metres above the forest floor, with an optional higher section reached by stairs. By day it is a calm walk with a bird's eye view of the ferns below; after dark the Nightlights version lights the forest with big hanging lanterns and installations, and most families say that is the one to do. Allow 30 to 40 minutes on the bridges, longer if you stop for photos.
