Rotorua Duck Tours

Best for kids who like a story and a splash. A wartime amphibious vehicle drives Rotorua's landmarks with a joke-cracking guide, then rolls straight into the lake, on a 90 minute city tour or a two-hour Tarawera run. Infants ride free.

Such beautiful surreal views! Thoroughly enjoyed our day today on the duck tours. Our driver was nice, interactive cracked a few jokes along the way and really knowledgeable. Would’ve loved to stay on water longer as majority of the 90 mins your driving to the lake and back 😂 but besides that our group enjoyed it.

🏆 Family Action Verdict

A sit-down tour that works because the guides make kids laugh and the splashdowns break it up; it suits children who can enjoy ninety minutes of banter from a seat. The shorter city tour is the safer pick for younger ones. Bring a jacket in cooler months even with the heaters, and book, since the ducks fill in the holidays.

ℹ️ What to Know Before You Go

💡Choose the 90 minute city tour with younger children; the two-hour Tarawera tour is long for them
Infants travel free, but ask about seating for babies when you book
🎟️Sit near the front for the splashdown and the best view of the guide
🚗Even with heaters and blankets, bring a jacket in autumn and winter

We are locals and we learnt so much on this trip. It was absolutely fantastic. Tim was hilarious and knowledgeable the hour and a half went so quickly and we gained a whole new perspective on our city. Thank you so much.

ABSOLUTELY EPIC TOUR. So much fun. The guide (Irish guy) was really awesome, and funny as too. The songs he played as we entered water were brilliant as well. His knowledge was absolutely on point

Overview

Rotorua Duck Tours runs restored wartime amphibious landing craft from its Fenton Street depot. The 90 minute City and Lakes tour trundles past the town's landmarks with a guide who mixes history and legend with a stream of jokes, then drives down a ramp and splashes into the lake, twice, with a song cued for the moment. A two-hour Tarawera option adds a third splashdown and more lakes. The ducks have heaters, roll-down sides and blankets for winter. Kids often get a turn at the wheel afloat.
