The museum was one of my favorite experiences in New Zealand! I loved the interactive things you could do and how realistic it was build. The only thing which really annoyed us was the girl at the front. She was on her phone talking not even paying attention to her customers. My friend wanted to buy something at 3:58pm and she just said with slight annoyance that it’s too late now and we have to leave because she locks the doors at 4pm dot. That’s not how you talk to customers!!

🏆 Family Action Verdict

Reviewers with older primary-age children and teens highlight the interactive elements and photogenic installations as the strongest draws. The outdoor section is praised for the scale of the sculptures. Families describe it as a memorable and unique stop on the South Island, particularly as a first introduction to Oamaru's Victorian precinct.

A classic space with loads of character for those who like this kinda thing. For others who think of themselves as budding movie stars or even influences (😅) there are loads of great angles and fixtures for your posing ☺️😁😅 for inspiration, all at a few very amateur photos.

Ooh spooky. Dim lights and strob lights add to the mystery of steampunk creations. Some were part of notable films. There is an outdoor section as well. Older primary aged kids might enjoy this. Might not be suitable with very young kids. It's also quite "dusty" inside - wear a mask if you're easily triggered. Lots of stuff here for an hour amusement. Longer if you like to longer over every item to take photos.

It's worth a visit and you can find cheap tickets online for more than 50% off which makes it a no brainer. It could do with a bit of a revamp. In my opinion there aren't enough things you can actually do something with. Dressing up for a photo is $5 each. You can buy some more Steampunk items like goggles., hats and the obligatory t-shirts of course.
