1 / 3Toitū Otago Settlers Museum
📍 Dunedin, Otago South
A free multi-floor museum tracing Māori origins, the Otago gold rush, and Dunedin's colonial development. Children climb inside a restored tram, fire engine, bus, and police car. An education centre has toys, books, and dress-ups for toddlers.
Just wow! On our stroll through Dunedin we came across the museum and went in. To our surprise we didn’t need a ticket (no entrance fee). There’s a gift shop and a nice cafe at the entrance and the museum takes you all the way through the history from Maori people, the gold rush until recent stuff. Unfortunately we “just” had 3 hours and just got to the middle of the museum. Definitely going to come back someday and take at least 1/2 day to see the rest of it.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for families with children aged two and up — the climbable vehicles hold school-age kids for longer than expected, and the toddler education centre gives younger children their own dedicated space. Free entry removes any barrier to a full half-day visit.

“Really good huge museum with something for everyone. It's free but they would like donations. Well curated items from the Maori settlers, the first colonial settler's and the development of Dunedin. We enjoyed all of it.”

“This was a great little find in Dunedin. We were looking to fill some time and stumbled across this museum and it far exceeded my expectations for a free museum. Definitely worth the visit.”
