🏆 Family Action Verdict

A genuine working tramway where children ride historic steam and electric vehicles rather than observe them behind glass. The volunteer guides know every bolt and rivet, and their enthusiasm is contagious.

Overview

The Tramway Historical Society operates a living collection of South Island trams and trolley buses at Ferrymead Heritage Park. Visitors board and ride the Kitson steam tram, vintage electric cars and horse trams — fully operational vehicles, not static displays. Volunteers who restore and maintain the fleet lead tours and answer questions across the adjacent workshops. Group visits can be arranged in advance with a guided experience and lunch. Pram access available.
