This is my children's favorite playground. We love this place.

🏆 Family Action Verdict

A children's favourite with legs — the slides are long, the flying fox is fast, and the gully setting feels different from a standard flat park. Plan for a half-day.

“Western Park is a large park in the middle of busy Ponsonby area. Being on a downhill slope, It is accessible via Ponsonby road on one end and streets linking to Hepburn Street on one side. There are a lot of walks with some uphill climb given the nature of the terrain. The bottom part of the park features a large kids playground which is very popular with families and kids. Some interesting art installations are maintained on the top end on Ponsonby Road, on this park which makes this a very unique spot for art lovers. We had a great time in the playground area and kids enjoyed it a lot. Highly recommended for half a day's outing.”

“Really beautiful park in the middle of the city. The trees are huge and well established. The park is a gully so lots of great incline paths to get more than just basic, flat steps in. Highly recommend the stairs entrance off Hopetoun Street, it's a beautiful pathway all the way down to the bottom of the gully. The playground here also looks great with some epic slides.”

“Sooo cool! I searched google for ruins in Auckland and this came up. Since I was in the city, I decided to check it out. Situated on the edge of Western Park (Ponsonby Rd side), these sculptures are a perfect way to commemorate old Auckland. Just catch an inner link bus and get off opposite the spca boutique.”

Overview

Western Park occupies a natural gully in the heart of Ponsonby. Two large elevated slides and a flying fox dominate the playground — reviewers call the equipment 'epic' and note kids 'didn't want to leave.' The gully creates inclined walking paths through established trees. Art installations and historical sculptures sit along the Ponsonby Road end.
