Indoor play around Wellington: rainy-day insurance for the capital
When a southerly rolls in, Wellington's indoor play centres earn their keep. Junglerama in Lower Hutt is the region's most-reviewed dedicated play centre, with a ninja course, climbing structures and separate toddler zones. The Chipmunks centres in Tawa, Lyall Bay and at Brewtown in Upper Hutt cover the classic soft-play formula for ages 0 to 11, each with a cafe for the adults.
Te Korōria in Karori is a newer play centre and cafe with a birthday room and free parking, and Hutt Indoor Sports in Moera adds clip-and-climb walls and trampolines to its indoor courts. Out in the Wairarapa, Go Zone in Waingawa is the standout, holding 4.9 stars for its combined playground and trampoline park with a toddler zone.
Several community recreation centres, including Akau Tangi in Kilbirnie, the Tawa Recreation Centre and the Karori Recreation Centre, run toddler gym sessions and bookable party halls, a cheaper option worth knowing about for younger kids.
Most centres require grip socks and get busiest on wet weekend mornings. Weekday toddler sessions are usually quieter, so check each venue's listing for times and party packages.
