Adventure Ave
📍 Richmond, Canterbury
An outdoor play space in Christchurch's red zone, designed by local school children with the Avon Ōtākaro Network. Bike tracks with banked corners, bumps and jumps, plus play houses and creative play areas that keep growing in stages.
I've loved every minute working with the amazing group of children who have designed, created and are helping to caretake this site. Keep visiting because they have some great ideas yet to come!
🏆 Family Action Verdict
A grassroots, volunteer-built space rather than a polished commercial playground. Suits families with kids who like bikes and scooters, and anyone keen to support a youth-led community project. Facilities are basic and the space keeps changing as new stages are built.

Overview
Adventure Ave sits in the residential red zone off Medway Street and Woodchester Avenue. It was designed by children: the Red Zone Action Team from Banks Ave Primary School spent over a year on the concept with the Avon Ōtākaro Network and presented their scale model to full Council. Volunteers, including 150 Student Volunteer Army members, moved ten truckloads of shingle to build bike tracks with banked corners, bumps and jumps. Play houses and creative play areas complete the space.
