đ Carterton, Wellington
Carterton Railway Museum on Wheatstone Street is a small community-run museum in the Carterton Railway Station precinct. Wairarapa railway memorabilia, old wagons, and a small diesel shunting locomotive in the railway yard. Open most Sundays for guided visits.
This may be a small museum with a small collection, but the visit is guided and filled with personal touches that bring everything to life. Even more, we felt that our donation is helping to make it better. We're looking forward to the Daffodil Day steam train excursion.
đ Family Action Verdict
Best for kids and adults with a railway interest, or anyone in the Wairarapa with a Sunday morning to spare. Reviewers describe the personal, guided format as the standout â small collection, but each item gets context.
