📍 Masterton, Wellington
The Miniature Train at Queen Elizabeth Park runs three laps around a small island on a quarter-scale railway with a DG class diesel and occasional Atlantic steam runs. No booking needed. Operates Saturdays and select holidays.
A great place to visit on the island at Queen Elizabeth Park. Only $1 a ride for 3 laps of the island with a tunnel and 4 bridges. A café nearby and boats for hire, plus a deer park, children's playground, miniput and a new skate park. Have a picnic on the island or at one of the many tables around the park. A great family place to visit.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Reviewers from toddlers to grandparents describe this as a highlight. The three-lap circuit gives a proper ride rather than a token loop, the tunnel and bridges add variety, and the conductor's commentary keeps energy up. The fare means families can ride multiple times. Reviewers note the queue moves fast even when it looks long.

“Awesome little train takes you on a trip around the inside of the pond. Great for all ages and sizes, it’s comfortable to ride on. Best part is you get 3 laps for only $1! Don’t be put off if the line is a little long, it moves fast”

“This is a great asset for Masterton. The railway is one quarter scale and operates a DG class diesel with occasional runs by a 4-4-2 Atlantic steam locomotive. Rides are only $1 - unchanged since about 1986!”
