Christchurch Botanic Gardens
📍 Christchurch Central City, Canterbury
Christchurch Botanic Gardens occupies 21 hectares in the city centre, bordering the Avon River, with towering specimen trees, rose and dahlia gardens, and conservatories. Entry is free and the flat paths are pram-friendly throughout.
If you need some time to soak in nature right in the city centre, this is the place... bring your self and enjoy a good walk among the flora and fauna meticulously curated... the giants among trees, the wandering plants and wild flowers taking your attention... but really your final destination was the multi varieties of the Rose Garden collection! My great surprise was the beautiful big blooms of dahlias!!!
🏆 Family Action Verdict
A genuinely unhurried space — children have room to run under the big trees and adults can take a slower pace through the rose and conservatory sections. The river border adds an extra element of interest on warm days.

“Really loved this place! Peaceful, tranquil and gorgeous in the spring sunshine. Wished I could have seen it a few weeks earlier as well as I love daffodils but then again the roses weren’t quite out but … the azalea and rhododendron were. So not at all disappointed. Just means I’ll have to visit again!!! Definitely worth a visit it two and walkable from the city centre.”

“Really nice gardens to walk around and can easily spend 3+ hours here. Lots of different varieties of plants and added bonus of it being adjacent to Avon River. A must visit if you're visiting Christchurch”
