The Esplanade Scenic Railway runs a 2.2km miniature track through native bush at Victoria Esplanade in Palmerston North. Operating since 1969, with a wheelchair-accessible carriage, volunteer crew, café, and free parking.
Visit to Palmy mid January '21. Loved the ride so much, did it twice in a row. Not just for little kids. Took pics/video the first time, then just enjoyed the scenery and birdsong second time round. If I lived in Palmy I'd be volunteering to drive the train, just so I could meander through the lovely bush each time and listen to the birds. Cheap as, I thought it would cost more. Along with the gardens, it was a great way to spend some time in Palmy.

“It’s great there is a carriage for people in wheelchairs to ride the train! The helpful volunteers will assist in loading and securing the wheelchairs, and there is a ramp at the far end of the main station for easy access. Bigger wheelchairs/power chairs should fit too, with a bit of help to parallel park them. Best $3 of fun in Palmy for everyone!”

“A great Attraction in Palmerston North for all ages riding along the tracks weaving through bush & open spaces. Very friendly volunteer staff who help to make it an enjoyable experience. Rides at present $3.00 per rider return which is great.”

Overview
