“Goldfields railway is on the old east coast main trunk section of the NZ rail network. It now only goes from Waihi to Waikino. It is well worth taking a trip on the train to Waikino station and then crossing the bridge to the Waikino battery museum and riding on the narrow gauge railway. The Waikino station does a great coffee and has some delicious food on offer 😊👍”

Goldfields Railway runs heritage trains on a 30-minute route between Waihi and Waikino, beside the Ohinemuri River through the Karangahake Gorge. The line follows the original East Coast Main Trunk Line, passing historic goldmining sites not visible from the highway. Bicycles are carried on board for the Hauraki Rail Trail. Waikino Station has a café. Wheelchair-accessible carriages available with advance notice. Tickets at both stations.
