Interesting museum with several activities. Nice one for the kids and plenty of explanation.

🏆 Family Action Verdict

School-age children who enjoy pushing buttons and pulling levers find genuine engagement here — the format makes you enact the history, not just read it. The combo earns its runtime: the museum provides context and the mine tour delivers scale. Guides turn technical mining into vivid stories. Dress for wind on the outdoor tour portion.

We bought the combo package with museum and tour. Extremely informative and windy! Two hours for the tour and one hour for the info center. I did some research afterwards and couldn't find validating info on some of the info at the center, but it was trivial.

Interesting historical site. Pretty amazing that the Cornish Pump building was moved. Interesting to see how many tunnelers were in the WW1 veterans memorial.

Overview

Visitors rattle the drill, crank the handles, push the plunger, and challenge the shady dealer at Two-up, with scale models revealing gold extraction from the 1800s to today. The Ghost Theatre uses 3D holograms to bring historical townspeople to life. Mine tours go inside the security fence with local guides — Brian is singled out as knowledgeable and a compelling storyteller. i-SITE and bicycle hire for the Hauraki Rail Trail are also on site.
