1 / 3Lakefront Playground
π Ohinemutu, Bay of Plenty
Best for a free stop in central Rotorua with kids of any age. A large modern playground on the lake edge with two flying foxes, a rope course and slide, swings, a basketball half court and smooth loops for bikes and scooters.
This is such a lovely playground. It spans quite a distance along the waterfront. There is lots for kids to do and for various ages and stages. The view out to the waterfront is really lovely. We enjoyed watching the seaplane and helicopter fly in and out. The grounds are well maintained and they have toilets available too. The tearrific truck and coffee truck are a nice addition to stop for a drink on your way out.
π Family Action Verdict
The best free hour in Rotorua for a family: toddlers get swings and low play, primary kids the flying foxes and rope course, and anyone on wheels gets a loop to lap while parents watch seaplanes land on the lake. Bring scooters and a picnic, or grab a coffee from the truck. It is open and exposed, so hats in summer and layers in winter.

βIt's been awhile since visiting Rotorua, man they've done a lot on the waterfront spectacularly. The new building with the spa/baths (didn't go in) is architecturally very good. Great outing for the family and tourists with the kids being able to keep occupied with the playgrounds. Good to see the wild life enjoying I too. Well done Rotorua!!β

βMy childrenβs favourite playground in New Zealand! It has everything for children for all ages! Flying fox, slides, swings, see saw and even a cycling track. Best part is that it is facing the lake. What a beautiful view for a playground!β

Overview
Opened in late 2021 as part of the lakefront redevelopment, Rotorua Lakefront Playground runs along Lakefront Drive a short walk from the city centre and is three times the size of the one it replaced. Local children helped shape the design: dual flying foxes, a rope course with a slide, a nest swing, a pendulum swing, a net see-saw, a basketball half court and two big smooth loops made for bikes, scooters and boards. A toilet block sits beside it and food and coffee trucks park nearby.
