Best for a wet Greymouth afternoon with a film. A 1935 picture house run by a community trust, refitted with two small digital cinemas, a green velvet couch room and fresh popcorn, with the old auditorium kept for live shows.

Classic movie theater and great place to pass the time especially on a dreary winter weather day. Watched a movie here on a discount day (believe it was a Wednesday) for 5 NZD. Venue looked exactly like the picture with less than 50 seats total. For the movie I watched, it was me and 4 other people. And not a single person more. I hope they can stay afloat as it appears many other parts of the city have disappeared. According to Instagram, prices are increasing from 1 May 2026 with adults paying 18 NZD. Still a good deal compared to the other countries for watching the newest flick and it helps contribute to keeping the theatre running. Attendant was very polite. Limited food and drink options are available.

🏆 Family Action Verdict

A lovely small-town cinema for a family film when the coast is raining, and the couch room makes it easy to settle small children beside you. Screens are small, so book ahead for a school holiday release, and aim for the midweek discount day if you are around. Check the programme, since the big auditorium is often given over to live shows.

â„šī¸ What to Know Before You Go

💡Ask for the couch room when you book; the green velvet sofas are the seats kids remember
⏰The midweek discount day is the cheapest way to see a new release with a family
đŸŽŸī¸Both cinemas are small, so book ahead in school holidays
🚗The original auditorium hosts concerts and community events, so check what is on

“I came here the other day to see the Michael movie. It was a great movie and it really made me think about what his life was like when he was alive. The service was great and the people serving us were very polite and had great working attitudes. The popcorn made my day, it was warm and buttery with the perfect amount of salt. The theatres are in great condition and were a nice temperature to be in. I cant wait to come back!”

“Theatre renovations make it comfortable to watch a movie while still retaining the heritage charm. I found the sound system, acoustics and screen good quality for enjoyable experience.”

Overview

The Regent opened on MacKay Street in 1935 as one of the JC Williamson chain's picture palaces, and it is now run by a community trust. A refit added two small purpose-built cinemas with digital projection and sound, one of them furnished with green velvet couches, while the original 468 seat auditorium stays in use for concerts and community events. It shows the current releases, sells fresh popcorn, and runs a cheaper session day midweek that locals plan around.
