Te Uru WaitΔkere Contemporary Gallery is an absolute gem! This is the place to come to if you want to experience new and contemporary art. They change their exhibits and installations often, to make every visit fresh and interesting. Your personal taste will inform the visit. Some contemporary installation are brilliantly inspired and inspiring, and showcases local New Zealand history and artists. Although I could appreciate the passion and effort that went into creating those works of art, I just didn't "get" some of the pieces. The building itself is an architectural marvel. It also offers beautiful outside views, displaying the wooded areas and the harbour as art itself. Well worth a visit!

Free entry and a stunning building make this worth a visit when the current show sounds interesting. Older children who've studied art will find real depth here β the staff are happy to explain what they're looking at.

βAbsolutely loved my experience with Adrian and Naomi! Loved the different atmospheres of the whole experience within the Te Uru Gallery along with the workspaces that really intrigued both myself and our children of Henderson South School!β

βI love this place and have always been a regular. Te Uru makes amazing curations, with gorgeous views and strong architecture. The writing for the exhibitions has always let me down and I often opt out of reading them. Today at Te Uru they said Bill Hammond was from Christchurch but heβs from Lyttleton!β

Te Uru sits in Titirangi (20-30min drive from the CBD) with views across the harbour, showing rotating exhibitions by local and international artists. Entry is free. Staff are noted as knowledgeable and actively helpful in guiding visitors through what's on show. The building's architecture draws visitors independently of any exhibition. A range of activities for kids including school holiday programmes, after school art classes and kids birthday parties. There are also Adult classes to learn drawing, painting and much more. Lots of ways to engage with curator and artist talks, baby friendly art tours, workshops and more. Regular visitors describe consistently strong innovative curatorial choices across a diversity of media.
