A great little museum with loads of information. During our visit, we had the chance to create our own art and photograph them as portraits. There is also a treasure hunt to spot particular items on a laminated sheet which keeps the young and old entertained. The astronomy photography was also on and that was truly spectacular to view. Bear in mind that it was an extra fee to view but well worth it. We also explored the kids area which was interesting and would also suit children of the younger age group. Overall a great place to visit especially if you’re looking for an indoor activity.

πŸ† Family Action Verdict

A strong free indoor option for Hamilton families with children of any age. The Exscite zone and treasure hunt format keep primary-school-aged children engaged for two or more hours. Special exhibitions are worth checking before your visit β€” the astronomy photography exhibition drew strong praise.

ℹ️ What to Know Before You Go

β€œHamilton Museum is a great place to spend a few hours. The exhibits are interesting, easy to follow, and well presented, with a nice mix of history, culture, and interactive displays. The space is clean, well organised, and family-friendly, and the staff are welcoming and very helpful. It’s a relaxed, enjoyable way to learn more about the Waikato region. Definitely worth a visit.”

β€œI really enjoyed the exhibitions in the museum, the one in the most of the photos is the Weaving Exhibition. Taken in February 2025. There were many other permanent and very informative displays in other rooms. Frankly I didn’t see the art gallery exhibits as I’d spent so long in the museum πŸ˜‰ Spoke to a lovely gallery assistant on various subjects, she was very helpful.”

β€œA beautiful and cool place to go and its free entry. They do have costs to a couple of displays but the rest of the museum is just fine. They have a lift to get people on wheelchairs, prams and walking frames up to every floor. Great displays and friendly and helpful staff. Thank you πŸ˜Šβ€
