1 / 5The One Room Fan Museum
📍 Newtown, Wellington
The One Room Fan Museum at 4 Corunna Avenue, Newtown is a private LOTR fan museum and shrine — owner Kathy is one of the most dedicated NZ Lord of the Rings fans, with memorabilia from the world premiere of Return of the King (Wellington 2003). Visits by appointment only via text or email.
Kathy is perhaps the most dedicated and loyal Lord of the Rings fan that we've ever met, and her story combined with the incredible people that she has met and corresponded with is definitely worth hearing about. She has an amazing fan-made room, filled with all types of LOTR and Hobbit memorabilia. If you're a small group, reach out to her to set up a private meeting and she'll share with you her incredible fan adventure in a 30 minute video with in-person commentary, along with up to 2-3 hours of amazing costume photos with pieces she, and her friends, created themselves as well as a few special items that were donated from other fans or lent to her to show in her home. It might sound strange to visit a random persons house, but if you've ever been a die hard fan of anything - sports team, band, Disney, other science fiction books or films, and especially the works of J.R.R. Tolkien - then you'll be in great company and understand her dedication. Just look at these photos and see how much fun we had here!
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for kids, teens, and adults with a Lord of the Rings interest. Reviewers describe Kathy as exceptionally welcoming — the museum is as much about her stories and connections as it is the memorabilia. Plan around an unhurried visit by appointment.

“The One Room Fan Museum is an amazing experience for any Lord of the Rings fan. The owner, Kathy, is super nice and sweet and will make sure you have a great time. The premise is simple, you make an appointment then you show up for a good time Kathy will let you view some cool video's that will take you back in time, then comes the cool part. You can try on many different costumes! It is super cool to put on the costumes, which are selfmade and high quality, and immerse yourself into the characters. Some fun picture taking then commences. After that some more talks about the different props that are in the collection. The museum is a real fan experience, great for people just looking to nerd out amongst themselves. It was a wholesome experience and would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of the Lord of the rings movies.”

“What an AMAZING time we had!! This place is a real local gem for everybody wanting to become the character they always dreamt to be. Kathy is truly passionate and tells her story and what she knows with a pure joy. We stayed almost 2 hours at her place trying a lot of wonderful costumes, discovering real props and talking about the movies. Thanks once again for having us at your place Kathy! I was delighted to become an elf thanks to you.”

“Thanks to Kathy sincere and pure fandom, our family was able to make fun memories. My little son, who had a hard time concentrating because the movie was too long, experienced being Gandalf himself and became even more fond of the Lord of the Ring movie. I think her pure girlish sensibility enriches the value of this place. Your kindness made our day. Thank you so much.”
