National Museum of the Royal New Zealand Navy at Devonport. Rich displays from WWI to present, positioned low for young visitors. Excellent on-site café, outdoor play area, and waterfront walks nearby. Open seven days.

There really isn’t another museum quite like this! Here you’ll find the courage, pride and honour of the New Zealand Navy, forged through long and fierce battles. I truly hope as many people as possible will come and see it for themselves, and learn about their service. I have to admit, I’d never taken much interest before. But now that my son has started primary school this year, and with it being his very first spring holiday, I came here just to fill in some time. That was a huge mistake on my part — I should have come much earlier and taken the chance to learn. In that sense, my son is lucky. Growing up here in New Zealand, I hope he can take inspiration from these people, grow into someone who loves his country, and one day contribute to it as they did. The museum itself is small in size, but the exhibitions are incredibly rich and well presented. And being right at the base of North Head, which was once an active fortress, you really do feel the history in the place itself. The gift shop is excellent, with a wide range of items at very reasonable prices — well worth recommending. The on-site café isn’t just a makeshift pop-up, but a proper stand-alone café. Outside there’s a little play area for kids, and you can enjoy a walk along the waterfront too. May the peace of this quiet sea always be preserved, and may the safety of all those serving in the New Zealand Navy be protected.

🏆 Family Action Verdict

The staff here are genuinely welcoming — funny, professional, and keen to make sure visitors enjoy both the café and the museum. The compact scale means toddlers don't get overwhelmed.

I enjoyed lunch at the Navy Museum cafe today with a friend. Beautifully prepared, presented and absolutely delicious Hash Potato with mushrooms and two (perfectly) cooked eggs $25. Perfect! Fun staff, helpful, kind and funny but very professional, and keen to ensure that their customers enjoy both the cafeteria AND the museum. (Which was fascinating!).10 / 10

Delightful! A wonderful gem with thoughtful, creative, and intelligently designed displays. The staff is amazing... So helpful! The displays will take you through a full range of emotions... From poignant to humorous. You'll learn about NZ's Navy... from mishaps to triumphs, but you'll also feel the cultural pride and loyalty. Don't miss it!

Came here on a rainy day with my 18month old. To start the staff are all really lovely and welcoming. The cafe does a good coffee and the blueberry muffin was delicious. The museum was great with a little one as there was plenty to see but it wasn’t huge and all the displays were low so he could easily see everything.

Overview

Torpedo Bay sits at the base of North Head — once an active fortress — with naval ships, weapons, photographs, oral histories, and aviation exhibits spanning WWI to present day. Displays are positioned at child-friendly heights. The Torpedo Bay Café is a proper stand-alone café with full meals and coffee. A small outdoor play area and waterfront walk sit outside. A well-stocked gift shop is on site. School holiday activities and workshops run through the year.
