Best for a free stop in central Hokitika. The town's main park has a 2024 playground built around a clock tower climber, a waka, a flying fox and wheelchair-accessible carousel and see-saw, with shelters, toilets and lots of grass.

Amazing playground for the children, plenty of room for a picnic let the youngsters play till their hearts ❤ī¸ content, plenty of parking clean toilets close to town, well done Westland council , many memories will last a lifetime

🏆 Family Action Verdict

The obvious leg-stretch stop for families driving the coast through Hokitika: free, central, with a genuinely good new playground that works for toddlers, primary kids and children with disabilities alike. Pair it with the glowworm dell after dark or the beach five minutes away. Avoid the second Saturday in March unless you want festival crowds.

â„šī¸ What to Know Before You Go

💡The playground opened in June 2024 with gated entries and rubber surfacing, so toddlers can roam
⏰Toilets and parking are on the square, and cafes are a block away in town
đŸŽŸī¸The Hokitika Wild Foods Festival fills the square on the second Saturday of March
🚗Shelters over the tables give some shade and rain cover

Overview

Cass Square is the big green square a block back from Hokitika's main street, and since June 2024 it has held the town's destination playground. The centrepiece is a clock tower climber with climbing walls, slides and talk tubes, joined by a waka, a flying fox, a wheelchair-accessible carousel and see-saw, play panels in sign language and braille, and themed shelters over accessible tables. Around it are sports fields, toilets and parking, and the Wild Foods Festival takes over each March.
