Best for a cosy film on a wet Hokitika day. A community-owned 1936 Art Deco theatre where the smaller Reynolds Room is set with sofas and armchairs, plus a main auditorium for films and live shows and a cafe doing coffee and scones.
Gorgeous old theatre, a great place to play music if you are a musician or band on tour and passing through the west coast of the south island! Their greenroom below the stage was the best of our tour in the South Island with Jackie Clarke. Passionate and helpful custodians too... you'll love having a yarn! Good coffee and scones at the cafe too.

If rain has cancelled the gorge or the beach, this is the best hour in Hokitika with kids: a film in the Reynolds Room feels like a lounge with a big screen, the volunteers are welcoming, and the cafe next door does the scones. Sessions are limited, so check the programme before you promise anyone a movie.

“When seeing the pictures of other reviews, I never expected that our movie would be displayed in a room with just a few sofas. Regardless, it was a very fun experience to watch the new Final Destination movie in this vintage-style theatre. It was like being transported back in time. Great experience!”

Overview
Hokitika's Regent opened in January 1936, an Art Deco replacement for the town's Victorian theatre, and it is now a Category II historic building owned and run by a community society with volunteers. The main auditorium screens current films and doubles as the town hall and concert venue; the intimate Reynolds Room screens films to a handful of sofas and armchairs, which is the room families rave about. A cafe alongside serves coffee, scones and baking, and there is parking outside.
