Best for a first-release blockbuster on a wet Rotorua day. Reading's five-screen complex on Eruera Street shows the big family titles in 2D and 3D, with a candy bar, parking and pram access.

Food and drinks were very expensive! The cinema was quite hot and smelly when we walked in. And i feel like you should be able to lean back in your chair slightly they were very uncomfortable. But other than that experience was great perfect volume, really good popcorn, great movie we took the kids to watch mario.

🏆 Family Action Verdict

A dependable pick when the kids want the latest release and the weather has closed the outdoor options. Sound and picture do the job and parking is easy. Budget for the candy bar or eat beforehand, and choose a shorter film for younger kids, since the seats sit upright rather than recline.

â„šī¸ What to Know Before You Go

💡Book online for school-holiday sessions of the big family releases, which fill up
⏰Eat before you go if you want to keep the candy bar spend down
đŸŽŸī¸Seats are standard upright cinema seats, so a long film is a stretch for small children
🚗Parking is available at the complex and it is a short walk from the lakefront

Overview

Reading Cinemas is Rotorua's main multiplex, a five-screen complex on Eruera Street in the town centre with just under 600 seats and the first-release programme you would expect from a chain: the big family animations and blockbusters in 2D and Dolby 3D. It is a conventional cinema rather than a boutique one, with standard upright seating, a candy bar and parking, and it is the obvious wet-weather fallback when the geothermal parks are rained off. Reviews are solid rather than glowing.
