1 / 3The Wall and Basement Cinema
📍 Rotorua, Bay of Plenty
Best for adventurous kids from about seven and film-loving parents. Central Rotorua's climbing gym has 56 roped routes to nearly 18 metres, auto-belays and a caving ladder kids adore, with a 13 and 23-seat indie cinema and bar below.
Such a great climbing gym with affordable day passes. Great hold diversity, plenty of routes, some very cool roofs and a lot of height compared to most NZ gyms. It seems like the locals love it too, it was packed! The routesetting felt very cruxy to me, most mid/low twenties were jug ladders to a really hard crux instead of a consistent challenge.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
A genuinely different Rotorua afternoon: kids from primary age get a real climbing session under a patient instructor, then everyone cools down in a cinema so small your family might have it to itself. Check the film programme first, since it leans independent and international rather than kids' blockbusters, and book ahead for groups or birthdays.

“Fantastic climbing place. Although bouldering gym is very small, basically a moonboard, there are plenty of routes for rope - with auto-belay, top ropes and for leading. Route setting is really good, very reminiscent of outdoor climbing. Staff is nice and helpful. Highly recommend!”

“This place is amazing, the very kind owner taught us the ropes of rock climbing and encouraged us all the way through. We also saw a film in the cinema which is very nice and cozy with beautiful picture and sound. We had an amazing day out, thank you!”

“We saw The Sheep Detectives, so hilarious!!! It's a beautiful tiny cinema with comfy seats and a bar. Seats about 15 people. We had it all to ourselves, it was magical. Highly recommend for a family experience”

Overview
The Wall on Hinemoa Street is central Rotorua's indoor climbing gym, topping out at almost 18 metres with 56 roped climbs across lead and top-rope routes, a few auto-belays so nobody needs a belay partner, a small moonboard for bouldering and a 15 metre caving ladder that kids make a beeline for. Children climb from around three, with Friday Rockies classes for seven to nine year olds. Downstairs, Basement Cinema runs two tiny screens of 13 and 23 lounge seats for independent films, plus a bar.
