1 / 2St James Theatre
đ Te Aro, Wellington
St James Theatre opened in 1912 and features a restored ornate auditorium with gold-and-red interior, balcony seating and a hearing loop. The programme spans Royal New Zealand Ballet seasons, opera, musicals and major touring productions.
Had the pleasure of attending this venue when having a night with Sir Bob Galdolf, and that's all I want to go on about really... But let's talk venue! Beautiful venue, the artistic flare and finishes are historically stunning, the theatre is roomy enough, seats over a long period gets a tad uncomfy but for a standard show it's fine, Bob had us on the edge of our seats for a.delightful 4.5 hours so after a wee while the bottom got a tad sore... Worth it, absolutely! Bathrooms are great, loads of stalls, clean and bright... The bar is averagely stocked but with show time essentials. Staff was lovely, polite and courteous. Although I didn't need to utilize, I did notice there was great access for those in wheelchairs or not as able bodied and staff helped these beauties to their seats and assisted thoroughly, this was my observation and could stand corrected from one whom has a direct experience with this. All in all a lovely venue and a fantastic night with Bob x Videos do not do it justice đđģ
đ Family Action Verdict
Take children to the Royal New Zealand Ballet here â the ornate Edwardian interior makes the occasion feel genuinely special, and the balcony gives a clear overhead view of the stage. Suited to children aged 5 and above for ballet; the RNZB programmes New Zealand-themed productions that hold younger audiences well.

âSuch a beautiful place! Legendary theater in Wellington and after undergone some renovations, it has been open and glamourously bring back the grandeur of entertainment in windy welly. I came here to see Les Miserables and it was such a beautiful performance. The new theater is comfortable, the seats are comfy, the stage is great, lightning is lovely. The toilets are clean and we have nice bar. There are seats which are disability friendly as well. Love to be back here for more performances. This theater is strategically located and many buses are passing this place. There are many cafes, bars, and restaurant in the near by area.â

âThis is a beautiful theatre with a connecting set of foyers which are much more contemporary and industrial looking the the early 1900s theatre which is a very fine example of the era. It is in wonderful condition and the acoustics, sight lines and stage size are great and there is a hearing loop. A great theatre.â

âI attended the Nutcracker ballet with a difference - a very New Zealand theme. We were up high, not at the top and I could see really well. It's an attractive theatre with plenty of exits and attendants ready to help if necessary. Despite being packed the temperature was comfortable.â

Overview
St James Theatre is one of Wellington's most architecturally distinctive performance venues â the restored auditorium features ornate plasterwork, balcony seating and a gold-and-red interior dating to 1912. Later foyers take a contrasting industrial tone. The programme anchors on Royal New Zealand Ballet seasons alongside touring musicals and opera. Sightlines are strong from the upper balcony. Attendants are stationed on every level.
