Best for a free hour with a view. Titirangi, or Kaiti Hill, rises above the port with lookouts over the city and bay, bush tracks and stair climbs, a fitness trail, picnic spots and a small playground. Drive to the top if little legs give out.
Great view of the Bay and the highest vantage point near town. Challenge yourself to walk the loop, but you can drive up here, which is somewhat special these days as more as more summits have been closed to vehicle traffic over the decades. One way traffic only, and a dedicated path for walkers and cyclists. There are a number of waking tracks that come off the main road as well. On a good day, a brilliant place for a picnic, and good days are easy to come by around here.

An easy win with any age: drive the family to the summit for the view and the playground, then send the older kids and a parent down and back up the stair track while the little ones picnic. Go early for the sunrise, since Gisborne is the first city to see it, or late for the lights. Keep children on the walkers' path; cars use the same hill.

“Great walk, not too long but not too short either. Stairs were a killer but a great challenge if you're not as unfit as me probably! There are alternative routes that gradually slope up if you prefer an easier path. Great views at the top!”

“Great exercise area. Excellent views. Fantastic blend of trees, paths and shared Roadway. Need to respect shared roadway as traffic accelerates up the hill. Few Japanese climber weeds agmonst trees, posing as a threat.”

Overview
Titirangi Reserve covers Kaiti Hill, the 130 metre knob above Gisborne's port that Māori fortified as a pā and where, at its base, Captain Cook first came ashore in 1769. A one-way summit road, with a separate path for walkers and cyclists, climbs to four lookouts over the city, its three rivers and the bay, and walking tracks with stair climbs cut through the bush below. There is a playground, a fitness course and a wartime gun emplacement to explore, plus picnic tables at the top.
