1 / 2Auckland Art Gallery
📍 Auckland CBD, Auckland
Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki is free to enter for its permanent collection — early Māori works, European masters (Monet, Dalí, Picasso, Matisse), and contemporary New Zealand art. Kids' activities run on site. Open seven days.
Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki is easily one of the most beautiful public spaces in New Zealand. Whether you are an art aficionado or just looking for a peaceful escape from the CBD, this gallery is a masterclass in how to honor the past while embracing the future. The Architecture: A Tale of Two Eras The building itself is as much of a draw as the art. I was struck by the contrast between the heritage wing (as seen in the first photo) with its ornate French Renaissance plasterwork and towering kauri-topped columns, and the modern atrium (second photo). The "tree-like" wooden canopies at the entrance are iconic, mimicking the native Pohutukawa trees in nearby Albert Park and creating a stunning, light-filled welcome. The Collections: Bicultural and Bold The gallery does an incredible job of representing New Zealand’s bicultural identity. Māori Portraits: The 19th-century portraits by Charles Goldie and Gottfried Lindauer are deeply moving and provide a powerful connection to Aotearoa’s history. Contemporary Art: The upper floors feature rotating contemporary exhibits that are thought-provoking and often immersive. International Works: You’ll also find impressive pieces by European masters like Picasso and Matisse tucked away in the heritage galleries.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Free, central, and genuinely worth an hour or two — the architecture alone makes an impression on kids, and the permanent collection spans from Māori taonga to European names that older children may already know.

“Located 2 blocks from Queen Street—one of Auckland’s busiest areas packed with restaurants and shops—the Auckland Art Gallery is an easy and worthwhile stop. The first thing that caught my attention was the building itself. The interior has a really unique, modern look with a wooden ceiling that stands out immediately. When I walked in, I learned that several of the gallery spaces are completely free to visit. The first two floors, in particular, feature excellent collections, including powerful works by Māori artists and pieces highlighting Māori culture, history, and everyday life. The art was genuinely engaging and thoughtfully displayed. The main floor also has a comfortable lounge area with seating, plus free Wi-Fi, which is a nice bonus if you need a short break while exploring the city. I arrived a bit late in the afternoon and didn’t realize they close at 5 p.m., so I didn’t get to see the entire museum. But what I did see was absolutely worth the visit. Between the quality of the art and the fact that much of it is free, I highly recommend stopping by if you’re in the area.”

“The Robertson Gift is an amazing exhibition and worth going to. I never thought that I would see such an incredible range of pictures in one gallery in NZ. I loved the photo of their lounge. I thought that the American History exhibition was slightly over-priced. Although it was still enjoyable, the quality and size of the exhibition weren't as I would have expected. The service at the front desk is excellent and they hold onto your goods (umbrella and drink bottle) so that you can visit.”

“Auckland Art Gallery is a free and comprehensive tour through the world of art, beginning with some of New Zealand's earliest art by Māori. It is a wonderfully mixed bag of indigenous art, European art, pop art, photography, and much more. My personal favorite was the Dalí on display. They have a lot of activities for children as well. If you're in Auckland and you love art, you can't miss with Auckland Art Gallery.”
