1 / 2Weta Workshop Unleashed
📍 Auckland CBD, Auckland
Wētā Workshop Unleashed at Level 5, 88 Federal Street, Auckland CBD is the Auckland branch of the five-time Academy Award-winning Wētā Workshop — interactive movie-magic experience with prop-making zones. Daily Prop Makers Workshops for kids 6–14 during school holidays.
Wētā Workshop Unleashed is family-friendly interactive experience sampling some of many things Wētā Workshop works on. Unlike their Wellington workshop, I don't believe they actually produce much here film-wise, relying on original IPs instead for a more tourist-oriented experience. The perk of not being a working film production studio is that (also unlike Wellington) touching and use of video and photography is permitted and encouraged. The tour begins with a silly, albeit funny, photo op using greenscreen effects. We had a mixed bag of seniors, middle aged, young adults, and children in my tour. Our guide Veronica was awesome, helpful, and totally committed to the bit! There are four main sections to the tour. First is an introductory foyer with an amazing audio-animatronic. The second is a horror section focused on practical effects such as face-mimicing animatronic software, augmented reality simulating make up and prosthetics, and sound editing. Then a fantasy section dedicated to props, costumes, and miniatures, including a breathtakingly small-scale kingdom with hidden dragons and moving figures in the windows. Finally comes the sci-fi section with force perspective and green screen effects. The tour concludes after an AMAZING and giant animatonic alien robot thing before exiting through the gift shop. Then Cave (gift shop) has the three hill trolls and Smaug's head with moving eye at full scale. I believe these were salvaged from the Wellington Airport. Great experience over all. Entertaining and educational for all ages.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
Best for kids 6+, teens, and adults with an interest in film, fantasy, or sci-fi craft. Reviewers consistently call out the tour guides (Alina among them) and the hands-on interactive zones. Pairs naturally with a SkyCity or city-centre visit.

“We had a wonderful time at Wētā Workshop Unleashed! The experience was absolutely fantastic for both of us. Our tour guide was Alina, if I remember correctly, she mentioned she’s from France (I’m terrible at remembering names!). She was incredibly detailed, professional, and attentive throughout the tour. She always stepped in at just the right moments to guide us and provide helpful explanations without overwhelming us. We especially loved the interactive experience between the screen skeleton and the prop skeleton, it was such a creative and immersive highlight! We truly had a perfect time and highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Auckland. A very enjoyable and memorable experience!”

“As a long time fan of not just Lord of the Rings, but practical movie effects as well, this was truly a magical experience. Our guide Kais was charming, passionate, and knowledgeable and truly gave us a one of a kind tour. I absolutely loved the opportunity to learn the behind the scenes with someone as dedicated and involved with the film industry as he was. Kais was personable with educating our group and was great with answering all of our questions. The sets, props, and hands on interactions we had throughout the tour filled me excitement and wonder with every moment. Thank you to all the amazing people at Weta Workshop! This is something I will remember fondly for all of my days.”

“This was the most anticipated stop on my travels, and it did NOT disappoint! The blend of insight, immersion, playfulness, and heartwarming stories really makes this an experience you won't want to miss. Whether you're a LOTR fan, a Chappie fan, or just love the idea of taking raw imaginative power and forging it into physical forms, this experience is for you. Zennah was so fun and helpful, checking in with everyone throughout the tour, making space for cool little shared geek out moments, and really making sure I felt connected and engaged throughout the experience. I nominate Zennah for employee of the year!”
